Executive-In-Residence (EIR)

HTM  prides itself on continually  integrating industry executives in the classroom and general student experiences. To further advance student interaction with entrepreneurs and senior  industry executives the department established in Fall 2016 a yearlong Executive-in-Residence program to enable students to further connect with an entrepreneurial and/or senior industry executive. Over the year long period the EIR will teach course(s), host a series of lunch meetings “Lunch with an Executive,”   and present a general talk on a current topic  with  HTM and College of Business students. The EIR will also attend faculty meetings and co-host the department advisory board meeting.

Executive in Residence Academic Year 2016-2017

smcguffSteve McGuff started his professional career with Mobil Chemical Co. in 1980 after graduating from the University of Connecticut with a dual degree (BS) in Chemical Engineering and Material Sciences. McGuff attributes much of his career success to strong academics. He earned an MBA from UNH in 1985, helping him develop the skills essential to following his passion for manufacturing and management. His degree concentration in Organizational Behavior helped shape his management philosophy that emphasizes teamwork.

After 13 years with Mobil, McGuff joined Reflexite Corporation in Avon, CT in 1996 as its General Manager of US Operations. Over the next few years, Reflexite saw explosive growth, and the management team led the company’s global expansion and international integration into 20 countries. Steve led the international manufacturing expansion as the President of Reflexite Films Division and then as the Director of Global Manufacturing.

Reflexite was an ESOP company, which helped reinforce the leadership approach of teamwork and employee inclusion in the decision process. McGuff and the management team led the company to great success and developed an organization culture that was envied by many.

After the 2008 recession, Reflexite rebounded very quickly by catching the solar industry wave. Steve was part of the management team that launched Reflexite’s Energy Solutions Business, which quickly established global partnerships and built 4 international manufacturing sites, of which Steve was responsible for the design/build, staffing and operation. Throughout his career, McGuff has focused on identifying and removing barriers and obstacles from operations in order to maximize efficiency and profits.

McGuff has always had an entrepreneurial drive. In 2013, McGuff started “McGuff and McGuff Dining Inc.” with his son Brendan. They currently own and operate Lavinia’s Restaurant in Center Harbor, NH.  In 2014, McGuff also started his own consulting business, SJM Consulting LLC., to assist organizations in developing their strategies by recognizing and addressing the barriers and obstacles to their success.

McGuff’s values of giving back and creating a better world for future generations translate into involvement in an array of community organizations. Over the years, local programs supporting recreation and youth sports, youth scholarships, water pollution control, and local business and commerce, such as the Town Finance Committee and the United Way, have benefited from McGuff’s time and leadership.

McGuff is teaching Hospitality Entrepreneurship (HTMG 3354) and in Spring 2017 will teach a special topics course on International Business Etiquette

Lavinia’s Restaurant

Center Harbor, NH

Along with being our Executive-in-Residence, Steve McGuff prides himself on his charming, historical restaurant Lavinia’s, which focuses on fresh and local ingredients, and on taking a modern twist on New England classics.

Located in picturesque Center Harbor, NH, the house in which the restaurant resides in has a lot of history on its own. Built in the 1820s by John Coe, it has served as an underground railroad location during the slavery era, dorms for the Belknap College, and much more in its illustrious history.

We focus first on finding the best in fresh and local ingredients, building a menu of New England comforts with a modern twist. We mix that in with a level of impeccable service befitting of the city and a touch of New Hampshire friendliness.

Check out the Winning Capstone Class 2014-2016 client consultation project on Lavinia’s Restaurant

For this project, students consulted with both Steve McGuff and his team, and devised a plan for a new brewery to be added to the restaurant. Both Capstone class sections traveled to Center Harbor, NH to present their ideas, and a finalized presentation at UNH is where Mr. McGuff choose the lucky winning team.
