What are you currently doing, and how did you get there?
I am currently a campaign specialist for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training campaign. I got here by interning with the LLS as a Special Events intern working on their Man & Woman of the Year gala. I was looking for an opportunity to use the event planning skills I honed over my four years at UNH and to complete the 600 hours of internship that would grant me my Bachelor’s in Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management degree, concentrating in event management and minoring in beverage management from the University of New Haven. I was an intern for six months, and I was then offered a temporary position as a campaign assistant with Team In Training. After being an assistant for the last six months, I was recently promoted to a full time employee of the LLS as a campaign specialist.
How did UNH prepare you for life after college?
The University of New Haven helped me prepare for life after college by being able to have real world experience while getting my degree. The requirements of have two field work studies and an internship, while they were difficult at times, helped me to be more prepared for much bigger opportunities than even some of my peers in other programs were at the end of our four years. To me, being able to learn in such a realistic setting is the best way to prepare for life after college.
What would you change about your experience at UNH, if anything?
Being a part of the hospitality program was definitely the best part of being at UNH, as a class we got to work together on things that many other students at the university didn’t get to experience. There is nothing I would change about my experience.
What advice would you give to prospective students and their families?
My advice to prospective students who are interested in the hospitality program would be if UNH feels like the right fit for you, do it! Be sure that this is where you can see yourself succeed and you will. I truly believe that this program has provided me with the opportunities and skills I have to be successful today.
